Welcome to First Church of Christ, Scientist, Hartford
Members of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Hartford warmly welcome everyone to our church.
“God is Love.” This brief statement is at the heart of Christian Science, and our weekly church services are intended to reflect and express God’s healing love, which is available to all.
Our church is dedicated to understanding and demonstrating practical Christianity, as taught by Christ Jesus and explained by Mary Baker Eddy in her book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. The study of Christian Science can help you find solutions to all the challenges of everyday life, including sickness, relationship or financial concerns, depression and place.
“Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need.” Mary Baker Eddy
Join us on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. Our Sunday services are conducted by two members who read a sermon consisting of citations from The King James version of the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.
These books have been designated as our Pastor by Mrs. Eddy. This is the same sermon given at every Christian Science church world-wide. In addition, hymns, an inspirational solo, other scriptural selections and time for silent prayer comprise our hour-long service.
Our Sunday School welcomes young people up to the age of 20. The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures are the sources teachers use to ground students in the fundamental truths they can apply in their daily lives. Discussions in classes address practical questions with teaching that encourages students to turn to God for guidance, protection and healing.
Visitors to our Sunday School are warmly welcomed.
Wednesday Evening Testimony Meetings
Midweek meetings are held every Wednesday. These hour-long meetings include readings from the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures that focus on specific topics relevant to our world today.
Hymns are part of the meetings, as well as testimonies by those present who speak of healings, inspiration and blessings gained through the study and practice of Christian Science.
Join us for a service each Thanksgiving Day at 10:30 a.m. This unique service includes readings from the Bible and Science and Health, hymns, a solo, and time for the congregation to express gratitude appropriate to this special day.
Experienced attendants lovingly care for infants and children too young for Sunday School during the Sunday and Wednesday services.
The Christian Science Reading Room is an open door to the community where visitors find a quiet place to read, study and pray. Located in our church edifice at the Sunday School entrance, this is a spiritual discovery center for all those seeking a closer relationship to God.
Bibles, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, inspirational periodicals, CD’s and The Christian Science Monitor are available for purchase, loan or to read onsite. A computer provides links to many other resources on Christian Science. About our Church
Mary Baker Eddy’s study of the Bible led her to the understanding that the healing power practiced by Jesus centuries ago can be demonstrated today. She learned that the truths Jesus taught are relevant for all time and all mankind. In 1879 she established the Christian Science Church on the spiritual foundation of Christ-healing. This church is a branch of The Mother Church in Boston. Our church was founded in Hartford in 1898 and has been a healing presence in the greater Hartford community since that time.
Mary Baker Eddy established the Christian Science church “to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing.” (From The Manual of The Mother Church, by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 17.)
